How it works!

Using infrared heating in your garage or workshop will make it more comfortable to work in during the cold winter months.  The Serengeti-IR produces infrared radiant energy from its tubing and is directed downward by the reflectors above them.  The Serengeti-IR heats your garage just like the sun by heating all the objects in its path without heating the air directly.  Our main goal in heating an entire space as a whole is to get the heat energy into the floor.  The floor is typically the largest mass within any building, thus the floor becomes the primary source of heat.  Once the floor is warmed it will release the heat slowly back into the space and warm the air.   The Serengeti-IR radiant infrared heater can save you 30% to 50% over using a forced air type heater.

Do I have enough room in my garage for a Serengeti-IR?

One of the first things to consider is do you have enough room in your garage to meet the required clearance to combustibles.  Ideally you want to hang your system above an area where you have the most open floor space so the energy can be absorbed by the floor as well as all the objects.

Minimum clearances to combustibles must be maintained for wall, floor, and ceiling temperatures.  The clearance to combustibles is 5" above the system, 12" to 24" away from the wall depending on which heater you choose, directly below the heater the clearance to combustibles is 44" to 57" depending on which heater you choose.  You will need minimum of 6" of hanging chain from the ceiling, and the systems should not be mounted less than 7' above the floor.

Please see the clearance to combustibles information in the Installation Manual for details.
